The Women’s Initiative Movement (WIM) hosted a landmark event recently, drawing notable personalities from various sectors of society.
In her welcome address, the Founder and President, Distinguished Uyanna Commie, shared the story behind the establishment of the organisation and the vision that birthed it.
She explained that WIM is a non-political, non-religious, and non-governmental organisation founded over five years ago with a clear mandate to inspire, uplift, and empower women across the nation.
Since its establishment, the movement has remained committed to promoting the advancement and overall well-being of women. The event, themed “Love in Action: A Celebration of Women,” was inspired by the prevailing economic challenges facing the country, which have left many women feeling unsettled, discouraged, and hopeless. The gathering was designed as a platform for connection, encouragement, and mutual strengthening.
The occasion was graced by distinguished guests including Dr. Eze Benjamin, Dr. Anthonia Bisola Otunla, Mr. Olushola Olanrewaju, Mr. Andy Ogor, Onowu Godwin Ekezie, Chief John Apati, Engineer Walter, Barrister Dr. Esther Ileogben, Honorable Blessing Omodele and women from six local governments.
Reaffirming the organisation’s independence, the Founder emphasized that WIM thrives on the goodwill and voluntary support of passionate individuals who believe women are invaluable to society and deserve consistent empowerment and support.
Looking to the future, the Founder, alongside her team—Distinguished Chioma Onwuemeli, Distinguished Juliet Nduka, Distinguished Oluwatoyin Yusuf, Distinguished Mary Udoh, Distinguished Chinelo Abeme, Distinguished Vivian Arukwe, and Distinguished Abasiama Isong , among others—has outlined strategic initiatives such as trade fairs, medical outreaches, widows’ empowerment schemes, and other impactful programs aimed at fostering financial independence and strengthening social support systems.
The Eze Ndigbo of Surulere expressed great delight at the successful outing, symbolically doffing his cap in admiration of the women’s efforts.
Speaking on mental health, Dr. Anthonia Bisola encouraged women to practice self-love as the foundation of a healthy and fulfilling life. She noted that many challenges arise when individuals neglect self-worth and engage in negative self-talk.
Urging the women to maintain a positive self-image, she explained that how they see themselves influences how others perceive and treat them. She concluded by reminding them to prioritize self-love regardless of their circumstances, adding pointedly that “women are not rehabilitation centres for broken men.”
Responding to a question on marital challenges, Onowu Godwin cited Numbers 30:3–5, advising women to honour their husbands as a pathway to mutual love and respect in marriage.
In his remarks, Mr. Olushola Olanrewaju expressed enthusiasm for the initiative and pledged to empower ten women from different local governments with refrigerators and business partnership opportunities through his company.
He also encouraged married women to sustain the qualities and appearance that initially attracted their husbands, stating that “only a foolish husband will mistreat a loyal wife.”
