What initially seemed like a road accident on a busy evening in the district has now been uncovered as a meticulously orchestrated crime driven by obsession and deception.

Authorities have revealed that a 24-year-old man and his friend staged a scooter crash, intentionally injured a woman, and then pretended to be her savior—all in an effort to gain her trust and sympathy.

The accused are Ranjith Rajan, 24, from Mammoodu, Konni, and his 19-year-old friend Ajas from Payyanamon.

According to police, Ranjith had previously been in a relationship with the woman and sought to regain control over her life.

The incident took place on December 23, around 5:30 pm, when the woman was riding her scooter home from a coaching class in Adoor.

As she approached Vazhamuttam East, a car followed her closely, then suddenly rammed into her scooter from behind, causing her to fall hard onto the road. The car didn’t stop.

Bystanders rushed to her aid, stunned by the abrupt crash.

It was then that Ranjith arrived in an Innova car. Claiming to be the woman’s husband, he reassured the crowd and took her to a private hospital in Konni, presenting himself as the caring rescuer.

However, police later confirmed that this "rescue" was part of the scheme.

The woman sustained serious injuries, including a dislocated right elbow, a fractured little finger, and multiple cuts and bruises.

Initially, the incident was treated as a routine accident based on the woman's statement.

As time passed, suspicions grew, and inconsistencies emerged during questioning.

A more thorough investigation revealed that the accident had been planned in advance. It was discovered that Ajas deliberately crashed into the woman’s scooter at Ranjith’s command, while Ranjith played the role of the concerned partner to gain sympathy from her family.

Once the truth was uncovered, charges of attempted murder were added to the case.

“The accused believed they could manipulate emotions through fear and gratitude,” said a police officer.

“But their scheme caused significant harm and could have resulted in a tragic outcome.”

The case is under investigation by Sub-Inspector Alexkutty S of Pathanamthitta police.

Both suspects have been arrested and brought before the court.
