The remains of three siblings who lost their lives in a fire outbreak at the Great Nigeria Insurance House on Martins Street, Lagos Island, on December 24, 2025, were buried on Wednesday in Uzoakwa community, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, amid grief and tears.
The deceased—Steve Onyeka Omatu (40), Casmir Nnabuike Omatu (39), and Collins Kenechukwu Omatu (37), all members of the Omatu family of Uzoakwa—were laid to rest in the presence of family members, relatives, and sympathisers.
The brothers died after they were trapped inside the burning high-rise building in Lagos, an incident that stunned residents and renewed concerns about fire safety and emergency response in the country.
Family sources said the severity of the fire made rescue efforts impossible, leaving only ashes to be recovered for burial.
Before the interment, a service of songs and Requiem Mass was held on January 7 at Jesus the Saviour Catholic Church, Ejigbo, Lagos.
Among the dignitaries at the burial ceremony in Ihiala were a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress and former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi; the lawmaker representing Ihiala Federal Constituency, Pascal Agbodike; and other mourners.
In his condolence message, Obi prayed that God would grant the departed souls eternal rest, noting that humans have no power to question the will of the Almighty, who gives and takes life.
He said he attended the burial personally to console the bereaved family, especially the young widows and their children, describing the loss of such energetic and promising young men as deeply painful.
Obi also prayed that God would grant the deceased eternal rest and give the family the strength to bear the irreparable loss.
