Renowned Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli will take center stage at the opening ceremony of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games, organizers have announced, elevating one of Italy’s most celebrated voices to a moment of global focus.
Bocelli is slated to perform on Feb. 6, 2026, at Milan’s San Siro Stadium, a landmark venue deeply tied to the nation’s sporting and cultural identity. The ceremony, to be broadcast worldwide, will unfold as athletes from scores of countries assemble to officially usher in the Winter Games.
In a statement released Jan. 11, organizers said Bocelli’s appearance is expected to be “one of the most iconic moments of the event,” blending spectacle with the core values of the Olympic movement. They added that his participation will lend a modern, international dimension to the ceremony’s narrative.
The news was shared across social media by event organizers and Bocelli’s team, who described the tenor as “a global icon of Italian music whose voice is cherished on every continent.” The announcement said his performance would add an “extraordinary and unforgettable touch” to the opening celebration.
Olympic officials noted that Bocelli’s involvement continues a long tradition of integrating world-class cultural figures into major international sporting events, particularly musicians whose appeal transcends borders and languages. The statement highlighted that Bocelli has previously shared stages with global stars such as Celine Dion, Ed Sheeran and Ariana Grande.
While Bocelli’s performance will take place in Milan, competitions during the Games will be held across northern Italy, including Cortina d’Ampezzo and neighboring Alpine areas.
The opening ceremony will also feature a tribute to legendary fashion designer Giorgio Armani, who died in September at the age of 91. Armani’s legacy in Milan includes institutions such as the Armani/Teatro and the Armani/Silos museum, as well as decades of designing uniforms for Italy’s Olympic teams.
Bocelli’s Olympic appearance builds on a history of performances at major sporting events. He previously sang at the closing ceremony of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, providing a musical farewell as Italy handed off the Games.
In 2021, he also performed at the opening ceremony of UEFA Euro 2020 in Rome, delivering a widely watched rendition of “Nessun dorma.”
Organizers say the Milano Cortina opening ceremony is being crafted to showcase Italy’s cultural heritage while appealing to a global audience, with music playing a central role in shaping the atmosphere. Bocelli’s participation is expected to anchor that vision, merging classical tradition with worldwide reach.
Bocelli rose to international fame in the mid-1990s after winning the newcomers’ category at the Sanremo Music Festival. Since then, he has sold more than 90 million records globally, recorded numerous opera and crossover albums, and performed for heads of state, royalty and audiences around the world.
