American hip-hop star Wiz Khalifa has been sentenced to nine months in prison by a Romanian court for a drug-related offense connected to a stage performance last year. The conviction was delivered in absentia, with prosecutors overturning an earlier judgment that imposed only a monetary penalty.
Wiz Khalifa, born Cameron Jibril Thomaz, was arrested in July 2024 after allegedly smoking cannabis during a live performance at the Beach, Please! Festival in Costinești, Romania. He was briefly held by authorities before being released and later issued a public apology, stating his actions weren't meant to disrespect Romanian laws or culture.
Initially, the Constanța Tribunal fined Khalifa 3,000 lei, roughly $690, but prosecutors from the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) appealed, arguing the offense warranted a custodial sentence. The appellate court agreed, replacing the fine with a nine-month jail term for illegal possession of a high-risk drug for personal use.
Reports indicate the decision is final under Romanian law, which enforces stringent anti-drug legislation, prohibiting cannabis for both recreational and medical purposes.
Khalifa, currently based in the United States, has not been confirmed to face extradition. Romanian authorities have not announced whether they will seek his extradition.
The rapper's team has not publicly commented on the sentence or potential next steps. Wiz Khalifa has continued performing and posting online since the incident.
In response to the sentence, some have questioned whether Romania will enforce the ruling, given Khalifa's U.S. residency. Romanian criminologist Vlad Zaha considers extradition "highly unlikely" and the punishment "unusually harsh".
Wiz Khalifa's case highlights Romania's strict anti-drug laws, sparking debate about cannabis regulations and celebrity accountability.
